Today’s show is an interview with Paula Pant, founder of Afford Anything. Paula is a journalist, globetrotter, entrepreneur, and investor who has traveled to nearly 30 countries before her 30th birthday. She owns six rental property units that passively put thousands in her pocket.
Here’s Paula’s philosophy in her own words, pulled straight from her About page:
“I believe money can fuel your wildest dreams. That’s why this website is about growing wealth, not pinching pennies. This website is about harnessing the power of money to buy back your life. This site believes that your time and energy are the most valuable resources of all.
“I don’t work in a cubicle and I never sit in rush-hour traffic. I live life exactly as I want. I’ll spend 4 hours hiking on a random Tuesday if the mood strikes. Or I’ll stay up all night writing blog posts. Or I’ll travel to Bali on a whim.
“That’s because I cut ruthlessly on things that don’t matter so that I can spend lavishly on the things I love most: freedom, travel, adventure.
“I used to be a newspaper editor and reporter, where I interviewed influential leaders like Joe Biden, Roger Ebert and Patch Adams. I followed murder investigations, lunched with Senators and appeared live on primetime MSNBC. It was exhilarating work, but it wasn’t enough. Something was missing.
“In 2008 I quit my job and sold all my worldly possessions. For the next two-and-a-half years, I backpacked across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.
“During that time, my friends kept saying: “I’d love to do that, but I can’t afford it.”
I cringe when I hear that. It’s simply not true.
“This website is based on one radical idea: You can afford anything.
You can’t afford everything. But you can afford anything — trips to Rome, buying your dream home, quitting your job to launch your own business.”
